Abstract
This brief report is very abstract. It provides the reader with a very general preview of how the writer has approached the assignment. Abstract reports contain few specific details; they are more suited to team members who are able to work independently and participate in making decisions.
Purchasing the New Inventory System
Our team is evaluating two available inventory systems.
Our primary interest is in having a robust system that will grow as our company grows. Secondarily, we'll be adding staff over the next two years, so the system should be easy for new employees to learn.
We hope to complete our evaluation and recommend a new inventory system within the next two weeks.

Concrete
This report is very concrete. The writer has decided that this reader needs to know the specific details of the evaluation process, perhaps because the reader has requested them or because the reader does not respond well to abstractions. It provides the reader with concrete guidelines that the team is following to complete task.
To prepare the evaluation report comparing the two inventory systems, we followed these guidelines:
Set a goal to complete the report by October 23 so the manager can review it and prepare it for the October 27 meeting.
Arranged a schedule with Frank Rayborne to work with him for 20 hours.
Determined whether each system can manage up to 5,000 items per line to handle our anticipated growth over the next five years.
Obtained letters of recommendation from three companies currently using each system. We asked the companies specifically whether they have found the software to be easy to learn and use.
